Bing it on! We Like Bing!

Bing Changes Home Pages Daily

Bing's Compelling Home Page

Our Review of Bing

There is a new search engine in town taking direct aim at Google – Microsoft’s Bing.   The company is spending millions of dollars in advertising to encourage consumers to switch to the new service, but Google has a firm hold as the top search engine.   We took a look at the site and wanted to share our thoughts.

From a marketer’s perspective, having an alternative to Google creates additional opportunities and encourages competitive pricing.

Dramatic Home Page Images

At first glance we are were very impressed by the visual elements of this search engine – you may say bing has a bit of bling to it compared to Google.  The graphics are clean and crisp – right away you expect a different experience.

In start contrast to Google’s blank white background with the search bar stuck in the middle of the page, Bing has taken a totally different approach to initiating search.  The home page features stunning photographs of exotic destinations around the world which changes daily and you have the ability to view pages from previous days.

If you move the cursor around the screen you will see several markers that reveal pop up boxes providing information such as where the photograph was taken, the name of the photographer, and fun facts about specific items.   The dramatic images are compelling and draw you in to want to learn more.  This can, of course, take you off track of the original reason you came to search in the first place, but this is, of course, is by design.  I’m sure the selection of the photos and items to feature are a source of great debate within Bing’s offices.

Search Results

Another major difference from Google is the actual search results Bing delivers.  Bing categorizes the items in an easy to follow format and delivers more to you in one search click than does Google.  Bing seems to be a smarter engine and anticipates what your next click might be and presents it in the first results page versus three four or even five clicks later…nice…  Of course they have to get it right or the user will feel a huge time suck by being driven off course..

Have we replaced Google as our default search engine with Bing?  No – not yet.  That remains to be seen.   We are not yet fully convinced that we wont miss something Google finds by only using Bing because of their longstanding expertise crawling the web.

We will continue to toggle between the two search engines for sometime to come and we expect others to do the same.

Top 3 Things Bing Should Do to Gain Search Share

  1. Pump more Advertising dollars to Awareness and Branding
  2. Convince customers they wont “miss” anything by using Bing vs. Google
  3. Be patient – this will not happen overnight!

We will continue our review of Bing and keep you posted on new developments.

Hey Kim I like Bing as well.

The 2 things I like are the looking up of airfares using their Bing Travel feature. Just type in the 2 airports you want to fly from and to (ATL to LGA) and Bing with do a search of the cheapest fares and give you a price prediction on if the fare would be increasing or decreasing.

The other cool feature is looking up videos and being able to roll over the picture thumbnail and see the video play before you even have to go to that website.

Great post looking forward to commenting on more.

    All the best
